Solution

Intelligent Device Controller (IDCs) are small, dedicated, and purpose built micro-processors that are interconnected and perform specific tasks. IDCs reside within the Intelligent Device Manager (IDM) appliance.

Intelligent Device Manager - Medical Grade (IDM-MG) appliance provides connectivity to the managed devices.

VEGA Server: The Vectored Event Grid Architecture (VEGA) server is the backbone of the Nuvon VEGA solution and is usually located in the main data center of a service provider or an enterprise network.

VEGA Client: The VEGA client software resides on the technician’s workstation, creating secure connections between the workstation and managed devices.

Challenges

Healthcare providers are faced with proliferation of medical devices and systems with increasing dependence on automated data collection & device level analytics with convergence of IT and clinical engineering networks.

Convergence & Integration of medical devices with the IT infrastructure increases security vulnerabilities (i.e medical data integrity, availability & confidentiality).

Multiple vendors make the devices at the point of care (e.g. patient monitors, infusion pumps, ventilators & etc) which gives rise to complexities in alarm notification, because of the myriad of devices at the point of care. Clinical and other support staff get inundated or in some cases overwhelmed by information from a variety of sources leading to compromises in patient safety (eg. patient alarms to clinicians, system alerts to clinical engineering & informatics staff etc.).

In any healthcare environment multiple applications connect to the same sets of medical devices, but each require their data in different formats. Existing environment consists of a series of point solutions for each application adding to the complexity of clinical engineering departments. Manual data capture from heterogeneous devices at the point of care cause delays, errors and data loss. Proper device data acquisition is a critical factor in electronic medical record adoption.

Current paradigm is based on a series of silo implementations that are inherently inflexible and expensive to deploy and maintain. Any deployed solution must evolve into a robust infrastructure supporting many types of medical devices and systems.

Nuvon VEGA Solution

Nuvon Vectored Event Grid Architecture (VEGA) has been developed to address and mitigate these challenges for IT and Clinical Engineering departments.

Nuvon has created a flexible and highly secure system to monitor, control and acquire data from heterogeneous devices within a healthcare network. Network technicians or operators can identify and resolve a potential failure or a problem with data flow within a device or network element using Nuvon’s real-time, intelligent event management solution.

VEGA is a software and hardware solution with advanced security parameters that allows IT and Clinical Engineering teams to seamlessly manage and network a spectrum of devices—without the disruption of current configurations and deployments--via proprietary processor-level architecture.

The VEGA solution provides a management and monitoring system that lays over the existing IT infrastructure (e.g. servers, telephony, switches, and routers). VEGA also creates a networked infrastructure for heterogeneous clinical medical systems and devices, an array of equipment that includes patient monitoring, treatment, and imaging.

Nuvon’s VEGA solution is comprised of the following elements: Intelligent Device Manager  - Medical Grade (IDM-MG), Intelligent Device Controller (IDC), VEGA server, VEGA client, and VEGA Gateway appliance. These components operate in a non-intrusive and secure manner within an existing network environment.
